Thelma Grimsman

Thelma Grimsman, age 80, of Carroll passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital. Born on August 9, 1927 at Sioux City, Iowa she was the daughter of Clem and Florence (Wiskus) Balk. She grew up in the Willey-Dedham area. She was married to Harry A. Grimsman on October 7, 1951 at the Presbyterian Church in Arcadia. The couple raised their family in Arcadia and then Thelma moved to Carroll in January of 1992. Thelma worked in the dietary department at St. Anthony Regional Hospital for sixteen and a half years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Carroll where she belonged to the Ladies Aid and the afternoon circle. She also belonged to the RSVP for many years. In her spare time she enjoyed doing embroidery, puzzles and spending time with her family. Surviving are a son Mike Balk of Sioux City; daughters: Sue Greving (Duane) of Carroll, Pat Koster (Joe) of Lake City, Barb Koenig (Randy) of Ankeny, and Carolyn Tully (Kevin) of Huxley; two step-daughters: Georgeen Taylor (Ralph) of Door County, WI, and Helen Brown (Lloyd) of Alamo, TX; a stepson-in-law Don Koski of St. Paul, MN; 22 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; sisters: Marlene Brincks (Mel) of Roselle; Dorene Gute (Larry) of Carroll; brothers LeRoy Balk (Judy) of Templeton; Ray Balk (Faye) of Odessa, MO; Gary Balk (Merle) of Manning; Terry Balk (Nancy) of Council Bluffs; and a brother-in-law Dale Sloth of Audubon. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry, a sister Louise Sloth, a brother Laverne Balk, a stepdaughter Betty Koski and a grandson Bryan Koenig. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 10 where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the First Presbyterian Church at 8:30 A.M. on Friday, January 11 to lie in state until the time of service. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, January 11 at First Presbyterian Church in Carroll with Rev. Michael Fitzsimmons officiating. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery.
